{"id":19,"date":"2008-01-28T10:40:27","date_gmt":"2008-01-28T08:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/independence.blinkenshell.org\/blog\/?p=19"},"modified":"2008-01-28T10:40:27","modified_gmt":"2008-01-28T08:40:27","slug":"ident-ddos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/independence.blinkenshell.org\/blog\/2008\/01\/28\/ident-ddos\/","title":{"rendered":"Ident DDoS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may have noticed that the shell server was a bit slow last night, this is because someone launched a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denial-of-service_attack\">DDoS attack<\/a> on the server, more specifically the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ident\">ident<\/a> daemon. The network was down or very slow between 03-04, but the attack didn&#8217;t really stop until about 06 AM.<\/p>\n<p>There was at times more than 7000 open connections, and during the night a total of roughly 200000 connections were made to the identd.<\/p>\n<p>When I woke up this morning (7.30) it was over, but I&#8217;ve put in some extra protections so this should not be able to happen again. The identd is now rate limited in the firewall (with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netfilter.org\/documentation\/HOWTO\/\/packet-filtering-HOWTO-7.html#ss7.3\">limit filter<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netfilter\/iptables\">iptables<\/a>), and there was also some parameters to the identd (<a href=\"http:\/\/ojnk.sourceforge.net\/\">oidentd<\/a> in this case) to tweak the timeouts and number of connections.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s too bad those scriptkiddies can&#8217;t leave a decent provider like us alone, but I guess it&#8217;s a part of IRC and shell hosting bussiness.
